Resumo
This study, grounded in phenomenography—a research method aimed at understanding the different ways in which a phenomenon is experienced—sought to analyze the management conceptions held by veterinarian managers and their relationship with the development of managerial competencies in the context of veterinary clinics. This qualitative and descriptive research was conducted through indepth individual interviews with 30 veterinarian managers of veterinary clinics located in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. The data were analyzed based on phenomenographic protocols, enabling the identification of qualitative variations in the ways management is understood and experienced. The results revealed four management conceptions—(1) management as operational control; (2) management as the mediation of people and processes; (3) management as continuous learning; and (4) management as strategic integration—which were systematized in a summary table that outlines the main characteristics of each conception. The study demonstrated that the way veterinarian managers understand management directly influences their everyday practices, their interactions with team members, their strategic decision-making, their approaches to managerial learning, and the managerial competencies they develop. From a theoretical perspective, the research contributes to broadening the debate on managerial competencies in the field of animal health, reinforcing the importance of continuous and reflective learning in professional development and consolidating the field of management in veterinary medicine through references from the administrative sciences.
