Resumo
Several studies have been published regarding the care of children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), however, few have described the criteria used to diagnose and treat the disorder that have been adopted the professionals involved. This study sought to describe the use of criteria to diagnose and treat school-aged children with ADHD by mental health professionals. The participants included 10 neurologists, 10 psychiatrics, 10 psychologists, who attended in private offices from the region of Greater Victoria/ES. Semi-structured individual interviews were conducted, and after the transcriptions were analyzed for the purpose of this study and organized by Structural Analysis, the following data was found. The results showed that the diagnosis of ADHD done by the participants was primarily based on the parent s interview, showing no adherence to the criteria recommended by the scientific community. Despite a recognized need to work with a multidisciplinary team, the majority of participants adopted medication as the principal form of treatment. The communication between parents, children, teachers and the professionals seemed insufficient, and without the establishment of any treatment program.
