The objective of the research was to reflect on the role of the dystopia literary genre in the formation of critical readers. The hypothesis constituted is that the dystopia literary genre, even if written more than seventy years ago, as is the case in 1984, when describing social organizations characterized by intolerable living conditions, manages to criticize trends in current society, as it invites readers to broaden their reflection on contemporary social phenomena. The methodology is based on a qualitative research perspective, with an interpretative analysis of the book 1984, by George Orwell, based on concepts such as spectacle society and cultural industry, based on dialogue with the tradition of critical theory of society, inaugurated by the Frankfurt Institute for Social Research

- ItemA ancestralidade e o mulherismo africana em Diário de Bitita, de Carolina Maria de Jesus(Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, 2022-11-21) Fleischmann, Fransueiny Pereira; Schiffler, Michele Freire; https://orcid.org/000000019198468X; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9912476303376712; Nascimento, Jorge Luiz do; http://lattes.cnpq.br/5314773566668629; Vermes, Viviana Monica; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3806495173897941The present dissertation presents as its central theme the critical-literary analysis of the work Diário de Bitita (1982) by the writer Carolina Maria de Jesus from African traditions such as ancestry and African women. To this end, the fabric takes place around theorists who move away from the Eurocentric conception, and who, on the contrary, place African traditions at the heart of the epistemological issues of black Brazilian literature. In relation to ancestry, this will be referenced to African heritages seen in the work, such as ancestral memory, oral tradition and the author's bond with Mother Earth. The research will follow around the representation of women from the African women's perspective and from a decolonial gender perspective. As a theoretical contribution, researchers who have focused on the research theme will be used, such as Eduardo Oliveira (2021), Leda Maria Martins (2001), Fábio Leite (1997; 2008), Michele Freire Schiffler (2014), Nei Lopes and Luiz Antônio Simas (2020), Amadou Hampaté Bâ (2010), Clenora Hudson Weens (2018), Nah Dove (1998) and Françoise Vergès (2020).
- ItemA antinegritude em O Alegre Canto da Perdiz, de Paulina Chiziane(Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, 2024-04-12) Lopes, Michelly Cristina Alves; Schiffler, Michele Freire ; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9198-468X; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9912476303376712; Martinelli Filho, Nelson ; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6956-5400; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9186790476855298; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1365-5300; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1382634891316230; Ribeiro, Adelia Miglievich ; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9736-2996; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6821974709618583; Marcilino, Ozirlei Teresa ; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6694-8687; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9548763641862588; Caprini, Aldieris Braz Amorim ; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0431-4691; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7365705316481729; Rocha, Luciane de Oliveira ; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9576-5847; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7510057754988239The author Paulina Chiziane, the first black woman to publish novels in Mozambique and the first African to win the Camões prize (2021), has been standing out in Portuguese-language African literature, mainly because she deals with topics considered taboo in her country – namely: witchcraft, polygamy, racial issues, rape, prostitution, colonization, among others. In this thesis, we chose the novel O alegre canto da perdiz (2008), in which the author collects stories narrated by other women and uses her writing as a way of denouncing the problems faced by women in Mozambique. The objective of this study is to analyze the experience of the black characters in the work who use anti-blackness – a concept coined by João Costa Vargas (2017) from Afropessimism – as a mechanism to resist the oppression imposed on their bodies and minds by colonization. To do this, they absorb eurocentric ideals and put into practice an anti-black experience, thus accepting the narcissistic mirror of the white man with the aim of surviving within this society. Anti-blackness understands that the black/non-black dyad is fundamental to understanding the relationships carried out in the lives of black people. In this sense, the concept differs from racism and will be the primary element for studying Chiziane's work. Regarding theory, among several authors, the studies Fantz Fanon (1952), Homi Bhabha (1994), Achille Mbembe (2018), João Costa Vargas (2017; 2020) and Osmundo Pinho (2020) will be fundamental; to deal with the history of Mozambique Cabaço (2007) and Mindoso (2017); dealing with the post-colonial and Kimberlé Crenshaw (2004) dealing with intersectionality. At the end of this study, it will be possible to verify that when using anti-blackness as a mechanism to survive and resist in that society, the main character fails in all instances, as the system that has this concept as its foundation does not allow the victory of a black woman. Precisely because, as Costa Vargas (2017; 2020) postulates, black people represent the non-human, but they are necessary for humanity to exist as it is

The inclusion of fiction will be propose because the chapters, named as rooms, represent the process of imagination of the lyric self in the construction of the metaphorical house. The unusual elements will be analyze, as they allude to fantastic and wonderful literature, especially when it comes to the character Pandora and her object of passage: the mirror. It will present the self-fiction and the post-modern variant, the self-fabulation, according to Vincent Colonna's theoretical aspects. The procedures of the fabulation are present in the characters Penelope and Pandora, as they allude to figures from Greek mythology and their archetypes. Therefore, the objective is to relate Colonna's theory as it is closer to Lya Luft's work.
- ItemA aventura do reino encantado : a representação do sertão no romance d'A Pedra do Reino de Ariano Suassuna(Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, 2016-05-31) Paula, Keynny Lina Dala Bernardina de; Beneduzi, Luís Fernando; Ribeiro, Adelia Maria Miglievich; Mulinacci, RobertoThe presente dissertation has by objective analise the representation of sertão in the novels Romance d’A Pedra do Reino e o príncipe do sangue do vai-e-volta (1971), by Ariano Suassuna, having as theoretical support the conceptual notions of representation, appropriation and cultural practices to the perspective of New Cultural History. It was considered the cultural practices of Ariano Suassuna and the appropriation of oral and written popular culture texts. The vision of rural and archaic Brazil is built inside the novel through the representation of sertão as a place of confirmation of national identity, where the real Brazilian culture keeps intact to the detriment of globalized culture of big urban centers – being in evidence through the intertextuality kept by the northeast popular novelist and the literature of chivalry.

- ItemA canção dos deslocados: rap e (i) migração em tempos globalizados(Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, 2014-12-04) Nathanailidis, Andressa Zoi; Nascimento, Jorge Luiz do; Soares, Luis Eustáquio; Almeida, Júlia Maria Costa de; Gonçalves, Ana Beatriz; Nercolini, Marildo JoséThis paper aims at performing a comparative analysis between rap lyrics and performances correlated to the phenomenon of immigration. From methodological premises related to cultural and intersemiotic translation, this study has the objetive of comprehending the discoursive content of rappers’ aesthetic works produced by immigrants and their descendants and captured in the cyberspace. Starting from an analytical-comparative study, this research intends to propose problematizations regarding the nature of aesthetic manifestations of this type, as well as the assumed relevance due to its transnational reach, factors which many times come from neoliberal practices and from the ‘post-colonial’ intensification of reality. In order to do so, it will be adopted as an object of analysis productions of Yoka (Brazil/ World); MC Yinka (Africa/ Greece); Anita Tijoux (Chile/ France) and the group Tensais MCS (Brazil/ Japan). So as to enable this proposal, it will also be necessary to use specific theoretical support, which is related to the field of Aesthetic Studies, Cultural Studies and Neopragmatist Phylosophy. Among the authors present in this research are: Júlia Kristeva (1994), Stuart Hall (2007), Hommi Bhabha (2007), Rogério Haesbaert (2009), among others.
- ItemA cidade flutuante : espaços, deslocamentos e identidades na literatura pós-moderna(Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, 2008-12-09) Pizzol, Rafaela Scardino Lima; Moraes, Alexandre Jairo Marinho; Jozef, Bella Karacuchansky; Nascimento, Jorge Luiz doThe city imposes to its inhabitants an endless movement, a displacement through spaces that do not show any signs of permanence — may it be identity, physical or urban. The urban text is made of constantly moving bodies that write it, many times, without ever getting to read it. In Paul Auster’s novels, and also in several contemporary novels, in a similar way, the characters only possibility of knowing the city comes from their walkings and the narration of what they experiment and testify. In their wanderings, they move through both subjective and empirical structures, as well as words, in an attempt to give shape to the city space and to the absence of any feeling of pertaining. This essay approaches how the urban structures and the contemporary wandering and subjectivity processes are literarily structured, taking as a guideline Paul Auster’s oeuvres, especially the narratives In the country of last things and City of glass, and, in a minor focus, other contemporary novels. In this conceptual panorama, we will discuss and analyze, therefore, the configurations of the contemporaneity in order to study postmodern subjective representations, their relation to the spacial organizations, the identity flotations and the wanderings in the urban space/time, as well as the ways those relations are composed in the postmodern literature.
- ItemA colonização brasileira pelo viés da paródia: análise de textos literários que põem a história oficial ao avesso(Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, 2016-02-26) Pazolini, Camila dos Reis Iglesias; Siega, Paula Regina; Silva, Gilvan Ventura da; Patrocínio, Paulo Roberto Tonani doThis dissertation aimed to investigate the presentation of Brazilian colonization in literary Works, specifically the novel Terra Papagalli by José Roberto Torero and Marcus Aurelius Pimenta, and in the poems “as meninas de gare”, “brasil” and “erro de português” by the modernist poet Oswald de Andrade, which intersect with other literary and historical texts through parody. The study is based on theoretical formulations of Mikhail Bakhtin, Linda Hutcheon , Stuart Hall , among others, about the parody and other grotesque forms, about the presence of historical characters in literature and about cultural identity, using the concepts of historiographical metafiction and anthropophagy, being this last one reasoned in Oswald de Andrade, for the analysis of the selected corpus, composed of critical and ironic texts that turn the official story inside out.
- ItemA constituição da persona satírica na obra de Juvenal(Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, 2019-06-27) Cordeiro, Iana Lima; Leite, Leni Ribeiro; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6600-7692; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1222376244857241; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8162-2674; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3519019220994642; Cesila, Robson Tadeu; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1449-238X; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7812597574335813; Sodre, Paulo Roberto; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9333-2201; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2187592206957865Our dissertation analyzes the construction of the ethos of the poetic persona in Roman satirist Juvenal’s Satires. Because of the scarcity of empirical biographical information about this author’s life, along with the perception of a tone oscillation throughout his texts, there has been some dissent among the scholars who have studied his work. From the understanding of the historical context in which the poet lived and the observance of satire’s literary characteristics, visible not only in Juvenal’s poetry but also in that of his predecessors’, we discuss two great perspectives among his critics: the biographical reading and the adoption of a poetic persona as an analytical tool – and, intrinsically connected to both, the perceivable tone variance that exists in his work. The result to our own reading of the Satires, along with our weighing of the different arguments on the matter presented to us by several authors, is that there is, in Juvenal’s work, a constructed ethos so solid and cohesive that our statement on the matter is that there is only one poetic persona in his work and the tone variance should not be considered more relevant than the recurring themes in his Satires. Thus, our analysis of what aspects compose the satirical voice is based on the consistent statements he displays throughout his work about certain themes. Our results are organized in four categories: a) the satire’s poet; b) condemnation of wealth; c) about women and d) decaying of society. We conclude, therefore, that this satirist constructs his ethos as a Roman citizen whose only alternative, as an expression to his indignation towards his contemporaries’ vicious behavior, is writing satires, and who also perceives this moral corruption as both the cause and the consequence of an irreversible social decadency.
- ItemA construção da identidade nacional pela representação do indígena no mestiço antropofágico de macunaíma(Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, 2018-05-02) Raft, Gustavo Luz; Oliveira, Jurema José de; Soares, Luiz Eustáquio; Oliveira Neto, Godofredo de; Amaral, Sérgio da Fonseca; Cunha, Betina Ribeiro Rodrigues daThis paper aims to do a critical reading of the national’s identity construction represented on the book Macunaíma: the hero without a character focused on the indigenous element as a matrix of the cultural miscegenation process. In an attempt to rediscover Brazil and it’s origins, the book of the modernist writer Mário de Andrade mimics and satirizes elements that he deems central in Brazil. He makes a indigenous representation as a brazilian mestizo component and promote the foreign culture deglutition as national identity resistance. For this analysis, the concepet of identity is updated through historical and dialectical materialism, which allows us to surmise from the book - that even in rupture with eurocentrism and plaster aesthetic, mainly present in the used language - that remains a bourgeois traits and metaphysical that deals with the indigenous as the other, revealing a representation and image of the primitiv, paradigma, predominant on literary production of Brazil.
- ItemA criação de personagem em Niketche: uma história de poligamia(Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, 2017-07-18) Farias Júnior, Selso Vieira; Oliveira, Jurema José de; Schiffler, Michele Freire; Freitas, Sávio Roberto Fonsêca deWe aim to analyze the female characters creation and the possible influences present in this process on the book Niketche: umahistória de poligamia (2002). As a theoretical framework on narratology and character creation process, we focus especially on A Personagem de ficção by Antonio Candido (1988), Pessoas de Livros. Sobre a personagem by Carlos Reis (2003) and Reading People, Reading Plots. Character, Progression, and the Interpretation of Narrative by James Phelan (1989), as well as in the notes by Kwame Anthony Appiah on A casa de meu pai: a África n afilosofia da cultura (2010) and Fábio Leite on A questão Ancestral (1987) on cultural relations of the various peoples from African continent.
- ItemA criança em Luis Fernando Verissimo(Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, 2023-12-13) Moraes, Cintia da Silva; Salgueiro, Wilberth Claython Ferreira; https://orcid.org/0000000338174738; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4872315380917914; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0370-2855; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4714887614618104; Filho, Nelson Martinelli; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9186790476855298; Pantoja, Carlos Augusto Nascimento Sarmento; Sodre, Paulo Roberto; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2187592206957865; Carneiro, Flavio Martins; Siega, Paula Regina; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4593713985549602; Ramalhete, Mariana PassosThis work analyzes, in the light of studies on humor, the presence of children in texts by Luis Fernando Verissimo. It is justified by the author's literary relevance within the scope of Brazilian literature and the lack of research with this thematic focus. The corpus consists of ten selected texts from the author's extensive work, which there is the child’s presence as the central character, predominantly in direct speech: “Cornita” (1983), “Peça infantil” (1984), “Sexa” (1985), “A conversa” (1987), “O pleito” (1990), “O diamante” (1990), “O 'flete'” (1990), “Relógio Digital” (1990), “Festa de criança” ( 1991) and “Festa de Aniversário” (1999). Through the analysis of this set of texts, it was sought to confirm the following hypothesis: the perspective adopted by the author elevates the figure of the child while satirizes the adult in an authoritarian stance. Children are articulate, they talk to each other and to adults, they argue, they express their desires and, sometimes, they disarticulate the adults' arguments. We realized that Verissimo recognizes the child as an integral human being on its emotional, intellectual, psychological and social development phase: childhood. Therefore, subject who has civil, human and social rights guaranteed by law. Among the fundamental texts for the research, we highlight Manuel Pinto (1997), Mary Del Priore (2000) and Philippe Ariès (2006 [1978]), regarding the concept of child and childhood, and Vladimir Propp (1992), Victor Raskin (1985) and Luiz Carlos Travaglia (1990, 2015), for the issues related to humor.
- ItemA crônica e a crônica de José Carlos Oliveira em 1968: o império do sério e do útil(Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, 2015-09-28) Gonring, José Irmo; Nascimento, Jorge Luiz do; Albertino, Orlando Lopes; Amaral, Sérgio da Fonseca; Mendonça, Carlos Vinicius Costa de; Alves, Gabriela SantosThis study main focus is the book Diário da patetocracia – crônicas brasileiras 1968, by José Carlos Oliveira (Vitória, 1934-1986). Since there is no official status for the Brazilian crônica, we had to infer it based on a historic approach beginning with the XIX century, when Machado de Assis sketches a definition for the genre – still addressing the ancestral serial – as the marriage between the useful and the futile with the serious and the frivolous. In JCO's texts published every day in Jornal do Brasil and later collected in the aforementioned book (a posthumous work), we see an author working against the futile and the frivolous, as well as against the lyricism/intimism derived from bossa nova that characterized the crônica in the 1950s and 1960s. The social tension of that era would find a José Carlos Oliveira always ready, in his daily column, to address relevant topics in a serious and persuasive way, making it even difficult for us to call some of his texts “crônicas”. As a man of his time, in “situation”, openly existentialist, he answers those requests with a sartrean “commitment”. In order to understand the author's attitude, we resort to Bakhtin's concept of Architectonics of Answerability. We propose that it is possible to connect these two perspectives in order to identify the dynamics governing the individuals' ethical attitudes. In the examined texts from 1968, our evaluation is that the ethical dimension overlaps the aesthetical one.
- ItemA decadência ideológica, cinismo e niilismo: Machado e Brecht(Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, 2023-02-27) Nascimento, Luciana Rodrigues do; Soares, Luis Eustaquio; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1430-4705; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2213072997694353; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2734-1107; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6524467478871773; Borges, Bruno Gonçalves; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3200-4909; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0019694073171774; Caser, Maria Mirtis; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9247-8199; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1341358191671907; Schiffler, Michele Freire; https://orcid.org/000000019198468X; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9912476303376712; Amaral, Sergio da Fonseca; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9383077540938356; Meireles, Joao Ricardo da SilvaIdeological decadence, cynicism, and nihilism are devices present in some of Machado de Assis' satirical and Bertolt Brecht's epic works. The general objective of this thesis is to highlight that art is inseparable from the contradictions of society divided into distinct social classes: dominant and dominated. Thus, in the works of the aforementioned authors it is possible to find such devices that enable a more critical understanding of society.
- ItemA ditadura não vai ao teatro: uma feira brasileira de opinião(Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, 2023-08-30) Paula, Marcela Oliveira de; Carvalho, Raimundo Nonato Barbosa de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8131553979688267; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6928-6321; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0074139692500088; Rocha, Karina Bersan; Trefzger, Fabiola Simao Padilha; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7299183790903513; Souza, Marcelo Paiva de; Amaral, Sergio da Fonseca; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9383077540938356Considering the significant resistance established by the Brazilian theater during the military dictatorship (from 1964 to 1985), an analysis is proposed for five plays gathered in 1978 under the title of Brazilian Opinion Fair, which had their staging prohibited. These plays include Prefácio em forma de peça by Décio de Almeida Prado, O Túnel by Dias Gomes, Janelas Abertas by Gianfrancesco Guarnieri, O Mito by Lauro Cesar Muniz, and Sobrevividos by Leilah Assunção. The book comprises a collection of ten plays with texts authored by representative playwriters of that period – Carlos Henrique Escobar, Carlos Queiroz Teles, Dias Gomes, Gianfrancesco Guarnieri, João das Neves, Jorge Andrade, Lauro César Muniz, Márcio Souza, Leilah Assunção, and Maria Adelaide Amaral – an introduction by Ruth Escobar and a preface written as a play by Décio Almeida Prado. The Brazilian Opinion Fair offers an analysis of the political context of the time and the aesthetic debate within the Brazilian theater. With this perspective and supported by texts discussing the theatrical aspects of the years of the military dictatorship (ARRABAL, 2005; BOAL, 2020; MICHALSKI, 1979; ROSENFELD, 2014), from a historical standpoint (GASPARI, 2014; 2016; SCHWARZ, 1978; REIS, 2014; VENTURA, 2013), and emphasizing the issue of censorship (ALBIN, 2002; FAGUNDES, 1975; GARCIA; SOUZA, 2019; SANTIAGO, 2019), this thesis aims to discuss the tension between ethics and aesthetics in Brazilian playwriting during the Years of Lead, thereby contributing to the politics of memory surrounding that period. For the analysis of the five plays that comprise the publication, texts on theater text theory (PAVIS, 2015; SZONDI, 2011; ÜBERSFELD, 2013), humor (BERGSON, 1980; PROPP, 1992), and studies on the media and the middle class of the time (ALMEIDA; WEIS, 1998; HAMBUGUER, 1998) will also be brought into the discussion.
- ItemA donzela Laida e o enigma da feiura em a demanda do Santo Graal(Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, 2017-07-17) Schimid, Vanessa Annecchini; Valle Ojeda, María del; Sodré, Paulo Roberto; Leite, Leni Ribeiro; Arsillo, VincenzoThis work analyses the feminine ugliness in the Medieval context (13th century) by means of a study of the character laida in A demanda do Santo Graal, when considering the ambiguity of her figure and having in mind the importance of her benevolent function – to prevent the tragic destiny of Galvam – versus the adjective “ugly”, which she is given in order to not particularize her. Therefore, tries to understand such antagonistic aspects that configure the character’s ambiguity and its relation to the masculine perception of women in that period. It tries to prove the hypothesis that laida, in spite of the polarization that characterizes the feminine studies about A demanda do Santo Graal, in which woman is idealized under the light of courteous love or generally condemned by Christianity with the exception of Holly Mary, the aim of this dissertation is to prove the hypothesis that laida inscribes herself in a between place marked by Celtic and Christian cultures, inside a universe of evident misogynist and pedagogic tone.
- ItemA escrita como desaparecimento nos romances de Enrique Vila-Matas(Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, 2016-02-01) Toso, Francielli Noya; Trefzger, Fabíola Simão Padilha; Caser, Maris Mirtis; Delmaschio, Andréia PenhaThe novel Doctor Pasavento, written by Enrique Vila-Matas, appears in the contemporary scenery as a narrative that intents to regain a prominent position in the literature. Its narrator, a veteran writer searching for the beginning of the writing, when it paradoxically disappears, it is circulating around the world, registering its experiences in a diary. He resorts to the literary tradition and builds himself as a complex character made of paper that sometimes destroys its fictional condition and sometimes embodies the destiny of the literature, that, for him, it is to disappear. Considering the narrator's actions, this dissertation proposes an analysis of the self reflective practice in the literary prose of the writer Enrique Vila-Matas, with special attention to the novel Doctor Pasavento (2009). The theoretical starting point in this proposition is in the context of the discussion coined by some contemporary scholars as "the return of the author", which questions many self referential procedures in some recent narratives, and at the same time rethinking the premise of the death of the author. Taking into consideration the contemporary studies turned to the self writing in convergence with the thoughts of Maurice Blanchot, Roland Barthes, Michel Foucault, and others, this paper verifies how Vila-Matas' writing, through his meta fictional resources, discusses with those thinkers and other writings of the philosophical and literary tradition. This research takes into consideration how autobiographical strategies were taken and relocated in the said novel, considering a time where, before the unstoppable growth of the media activity, it has become even more problematic defining categorical boundaries between reality and fiction. The points around the effect of the activity towards the media on the literary system is part of the reflection of the vila-matasians narrators, contributing to one of the author's obsession: the disappearance. This theme is discussed here from the visibility logic in the contemporary scenery, which offers many resources to expose the subject. That way, the central theme of Vila-Matas' novel gets a paradoxical approach, when considering the appearing/disappearing game in the literary writing in relation with the forces of exposition and fading offered by the devices of the media. The novel Montano's Malady (2005), that joins along Doctor Pasavento (2009) in a sequence known as "tetralogía del autor", also has an important role in this dissertation, once that it invests in the staging of the subjectivity that continues in Doctor Pasavento and, because of that, it contributes to the identification of the consequences of the self reflexive practice in Vila-Matas' prose.
