Resumo
The study of transitivity has been intensified recently. Nevertheless, divergent understandings among grammarians and language scholars can be found in the literature, which highlights the complexity of the subject. This study contributes to the clarification of such phenomenon, given the gaps that exist around different approaches related to verbal transitivity. The latter is verified from a survey of the subject in several grammars. We then try to explain the phenomenon from the functionalist perspective of language. Among the functionalist theories, we follow the proposal of Hopper and Thompson (1980), in addition to the contribution of Furtado da Cunha (1996), which is concerned with the measurement of transitivity in passive clauses. Transitivity is the transference of action from an agent to a patient. Such phenomenon is thus understood as occurring not only in the verb, but in the clause as a whole, conditioned to syntactic-semantic and discursive-pragmatic factors. In this research we shown that the degree of transitivity of a clause is intimately associated with the way the discourse is structured by the user of the language, reflecting the communicative purposes of the speaker. We employ a qualitative approach over journalistic texts, specifically, news published in the newspapers, A Gazeta and Notícia Agora. We compare the degree of transitivity between the pairs of the respective excerpts of the stories, and consider the differences in the structural/ construction of the clause, from the intentionality that is found in each of the newspapers. By applying the parameters proposed by the referenced authors, we verify the possible variations of the degree of transitivity that is manifest in the corpus under analysis. The results confirm that the same information, structured in different ways in a clause, can result in different degrees of transitivity, which reflects the intentionality of the speaker.
