Resumo
The study of the speech rhythm of a speech community is not a straightforward matter. Thus, the analysis of this unique characteristic of the community and/or speaker results in a gratifying and intriguing enterprise from the moment that objective results are extended beyond the universe of calculus and statistics. Our work deals with comparative sociophonetic studies of the prosodic process related to speech rate variation in the Capixaba dialect (from ES state), in order to build on Barbosa’s dynamical speech rhythm model (Barbosa, 2006; Meireles 2009). When one modifies the speech rate of utterances, the stress groups change and rhythmic restructurings occur. This dissertation’s experiment uses sentences which were read by 4 speakers divided into two social categories (gender, age). Because of the fact that this experiment is based on the reading of 11 sentences, the results hypothetically show that older speakers and/or readers, who consequently possess a higher level of education, produce prosodic patterns (duration and standard deviation of VV units and/or stress groups) which are more regular than younger speakers. Finally, in order to obtain objective results at the scientific level, the present work may help to generate a database to help future sociophonetic investigations.
