Resumo
This dissertation examines the relationships between water bodies and cities through the lens of Urban Morphology, aiming to explore the "dynamics of bodies", that is, the processes shaping both water and physical bodies over time. The main objective is to identify the forms and relationships between lagoons and urban design in the municipality of Linhares, from 1950 to 2000. The study employs a descriptive and exploratory methodology, organized into four stages. The first stage involves an interdisciplinary literature review addressing the role of water bodies in urban settings, drawing on research from architecture and urbanism. The dissertation presents definitions of lagoons, informed by geography, limnology, and geomorphology. Additionally, it explores Urban Morphology, which serves as the theoretical foundation for examining physical bodies, urban design, and their formal relationships. The following stages are divided into three levels of analysis. The first level focuses on the lagoons and the territory of Linhares, defined by the municipality’s administrative boundaries. A historical analysis, based on documentary research, reveals how the terrain influences lagoon formation and shape, underscoring the connection between the territory and water bodies. Formal analysis includes creating maps, cartographies, and topographic profiles. Concurrently, the lagoons’ forms are analyzed using metrics such as size, shape, and classification, offering tools to understand their specificities and spatial relationships. The second level shifts to the District of Linhares, the most urbanized area of the municipality. It starts with a historical contextualization, incorporating textual, cartographic, and iconographic documentation. The formal analysis addresses the genesis of the urban grid, focusing on the initial settlement and its influence on the design, as well as the current form of the urban design. Next, the relationships between the urban design, terrain, and lagoons are examined, providing insights for the territorial analysis in the subsequent level. This stage involves collecting and organizing documentation, producing conjectural maps, and interpreting the findings within the theoretical framework. The third level centers on the Lagoa do Aviso as a key element, analyzing the formal relationships between the lagoon and the surrounding urban design over time. Graphical analysis, diagram production, and conjecture development are employed to study these relationships. This analysis reveals the impacts of urban growth, including a reduction in the lagoon’s area, changes to the terrain, and deformation of the urban design. These processes highlight the absence of adequate urban planning, along with weaknesses in environmental legislation and enforcement during the period studied. Through these stages, the dissertation aims to provide insights into the dynamics of bodies and contribute to the fields of architecture and urbanism by offering theoretical and methodological tools based on Urban Morphology. The work seeks to enhance discussions on the relationships between water bodies and urban environments, providing a deeper understanding of how cities and their water systems evolve over time
