Resumo
Seeking to know better the herpetofauna of the Atlantic Forest, the Squamata reptiles of the Private Natural Heritage Reserve Estação Veracel (RPPN Estação Veracel, in Portuguese) have been studied. So, sixteen (16) sampling phases were carried out in sixteen consecutive months, resulting in 108 days and 1,870 hours/man in the field. The methods used were: manual collection by active search, collection using pitfall traps, collection of dead animals, third-party donations, visual registration and photographic records. Thus, there were 403 records of 51 Squamata taxa. Apparently, this number is still far from the actual herpetofaunistic composition of the RPPN Estação Veracel, once the species accumulation curve did not reach its asymptote. Among the taxa that deserve more attention are: Ameivula nativo, Leposternon infraorbitale, L. wuchereri, Amerotyphlops brongersmianus, Boa constrictor, Tantilla aff. melanocephala, Dipsas catesbyi, D. i. indica, D. variegata, Sibynomorphus neuwiedii, Imantodes cenchoa, Oxyrhopus cf. guibei, Erythrolamprus poecylogyrus schotti and Xenopholis scalaris, that had not yet been registered for the region, and an Atractus specimen that does not resemble any species of the genus, indicating that it is a new species. Cluster analysis and similarity coefficient were used to compare the Squamata fauna of the region where the RPPN is inserted in relation to other 22 Atlantic forest areas that have similar conditions. It was concluded that in a stricter level, the studied area has great faunal affinity with the far North of the state of Espírito Santo. In a broader level, it is part of a cluster that also includes areas in the south of the Baía de Todos os Santos (Bahia) and other Central and southern areas of Espírito Santo. These two groups reinforce the proposal that nominates this stretch of Atlantic forest of Bahia as Hileia Baiana, due to its faunistic and floristic similarities with Amazon.
