Resumo
Given the importance of understanding the characteristics of the urban expansion process in the RMGV (Metropolitan Region of the Grande Vitória), this study sought to identify the areas of urban expansion during the 2010s, as well as observing the types of construction to understand de urban expansion and the intrametropolitan migration. To this end, the methodologies employed are a combination of a visual interpretation of satellite images to analyze the expansion of the built-up area in the RMGV and the use of data from the questionnaire applied by the project <Family demographic dynamics and migration patterns in Brazil: transformations since the 1990s= (MigraFamília Research), funded by CAPES and the National Secretariat for the Family, through Call 02/2021 8Family and Public Policies in Brazil9, and developed at the Postgraduate Program in Geography and the Department of Geography at the Federal University of Espírito Santo between 2021 and 2024. In addition, data from the 2010 and 2022 Censuses were used. In the 2010s, the RMGV recorded an increase of 1,819.53 hectares in the built-up area. Within this context, the municipality of Serra stands out with 47% of the total increase, which is equivalent to 856.16 hectares. The data shows that the municipalities of Vila Velha have contributed strongly to the demographic and housing growth of the metropolis of Espírito Santo. They also suggest that there is a reorganization of the population in the territory, since the geometric growth of the population has decreased with each Census. In this sense, the neighbourhoods of Colina de Laranjeiras in Serra and Jabaeté in Vila Velha have shown themselves to be some of the main focuses of urban expansion in the RMGV, characterizing both the expansion that takes place in lower-income and peripheral areas, and that which takes place in higher-income areas closer to the centralities. In this way, it was possible to verify the importance of intrametropolitan migration in the urban expansion process of the RMGV
