Resumo
The use of external diaphragm in the connection between I-beam and circular hollow section (CHS) column aims to increase efficiency in the transfer of their efforts. The research began in the early 1970s in Japan, where theoretical and experimental analysis of their application were made - in Brazil the first studies have emerged in 2005. The Brazilian standard for tubular steel structural, NBR 16239:2013, does not specifically address this subject, requiring the use of national and international research to theoretical basis. In this work were made numerical analysis on 104 models for different widths and thicknesses of the external diaphragm, where it was found the proportional increase of the initial stiffness and maximum strength of connections. Also compares the results obtained by ninth manual of CIDECT (Comité International Pour Le Développement Et L'étude De La Construction Tubulaire), which proved to be in favor of safety and it suggested re-evaluation of its parameters and application limits.
