Resumo
Generation of wastes is a worldwide problem, especially when it is deposited in inappropriate places, causing contamination of water and soil. Every day large amounts of waste are generated during the process of dimension stone processing. However, these residues can be used in the manufacture of ceramic products and have a specific function within the mass; they are not used only as filler, but as fluxing material. The aim of this work is to characterize, through x-ray diffraction (XRD) and x-ray fluorescence (FRX) analyzes, 33 samples of fine wastes from different kinds of rocks collected at Cachoeiro de Itapemirim’s industries, in the State of Espírito Santo, Southeastern Brazil, and to analyze how the compositional variation of these residues can influence the characteristics of red ceramics. Test specimens were prepared with 20% by mass of residue in a round matrix of 37 mm diameter and then sintered in a ceramic firing oven at 1000 ºC for 1 hour. The tests performed for this analysis were those of volumetric shrinkage, real specific mass, apparent specific mass, apparent density, water absorption, and optical microscopy. It has been observed that all ceramic specimens incorporated with residues of ornamental stones are in accordance with established norms for water absorption. However, the samples with residues of silica rocks had lower values of water absorption.
