The study aimed to analyze mental illness among teachers in the public school system of the municipality of Ibitirama, Espírito Santo, highlighting the factors contributing to this phenomenon and its implications for the school environment. The research is justified by the growing concern about teachers' mental health, exacerbated by precarious working conditions and neoliberal policies that directly impact the profession. This research sought to be methodologically grounded in the approach of Dialectical Historical Materialism and the theoretical assumptions of Historical-Cultural Psychology. The research was conducted in Ibitirama, a municipality in the interior of Espírito Santo, where, in 2024, the municipal school system had 107 teachers. Data collection was conducted through documentary research and semi-structured interviews with six teachers from municipal schools. The interviews focused on understanding teachers' experiences with mental illness, their perceptions of working conditions, and the factors contributing to their mental health. The results revealed a very high rate of absence among teachers. Between 2021 and 2023, the Ibitirama school system recorded 43 teacher absences due to mental health issues. The analysis indicated that the factors most cited by teachers include work overload, low pay, lack of institutional support, and job insecurity, especially among temporary teachers. The research also highlighted a phenomenon of underreporting of mental illness cases, with many teachers choosing not to formalize their absences due to fear of stigmatization. This study contributes to a broader understanding of the working conditions that affect teachers' mental health, reinforcing the urgent need for public policies that promote the well-being and appreciation of teachers and the teaching profession. The research suggests that it is essential to provide good working conditions for teachers and that these professionals be properly recognized and valued, considering the importance of their social role. It also suggests the implementation of psychological support services/programs that can promptly assist and assist teachers who are already experiencing distress. The findings highlight the need for a healthier school environment, where teachers can perform their duties without compromising their mental health, which is essential for improving the quality of education in the municipality of Ibitirama. Education should be seen as an exclusive factor in human emancipation, not a "space" for illness
