- ItemA realização variável das consoantes oclusivas dentais por descendentes de imigrantes italianos de Santa Teresa, ES(Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, 2015-08-28) Avelar, Daillane dos Santos; Peres, Edenize Ponzo; Savedra, Mônica Maria Guimarães; Amorim, Carmelita Minelio da SilvaThis research aims to describe and analyze the consequences of linguistic contact between the dialect varieties spoken by Italian immigrants and Portuguese in Santa Teresa, Espírito Santo. To accomplish that study a speech database composed for twenty-four sociolinguistic interviews was made with residents of the urban area of Santa Teresa, all descendants of Italian immigrants, classified by their sex / gender (male and female), age (12-25, 26-50 and over 50) and education (up to 08 years and above 08 years of schooling). It was investigated the pronunciation of dental stop consonants / t / and / d / before / i / by the interviewees, given that this pronunciation is done differently in the languages in question. After analyzing the data collected, it was seen that the language of Italian descendants of the urban area of Santa Teresa is distinguished by three social variables. Regarding the linguistic variables, the tone of the syllable was selected only for the phoneme / t /. This way, pronunciation / t / and / d / influence with the immigration language is more present in informants aged over 50, male and lower educational level. Thus, we confirm the change in progress in relation to this feature of the resulting language contact. This research is justified, then the contribution that gives language contact studies and also the description of the language in Espirito Santo, given the limited research in that location.
- ItemA transmodalidade de processos materiais : uma análise multimodal dos anúncios publicitários de fast food(Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, 2025-07-11) Santana, Tainá Rocha ; Damasceno, Gesieny Laurett Neves; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6556-9968; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1635569588468079; https://orcid.org/ 0009-0003-4802-372X; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3648564646285832; Amorim, Carmelita Minelio da Silva; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0801-5162; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2581414238332873; Oliveira, Mônica Lopes Smiderle de; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4973-7129; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6910760911003070; Tesch, Leila Maria; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3919-1230; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9705222558363890; Machado, Marcos Roberto; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7798-582X; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4733094588152083Grounded in Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday, 1994; Halliday; Matthiessen, 2004) and the Grammar of Visual Design (Kress; van Leeuwen, [1996] 2006), this research analyzes how the systems of transitivity and mood of Material Processes are constructed in advertising texts, aiming to fulfill the sociocommunicative purposes of the genre. The corpus comprises 200 fast food advertisements published between 2018 and 2024, collected from Instagram pages belonging to the four largest Brazilian franchises: McDonald’s, Subway, Burger King, and Bob’s, with fifty ads from each brand. As a multimodal genre, the study investigates the relationship between verbal and visual language. Thus, the guiding research question is: how do the Transitivity System and the Mood System of Material Processes operate at the interface between verbal and non-verbal elements in fast food advertisements to construct meanings and achieve sociocommunicative purposes? The hypothesis that guides this study is that, in multimodal texts, these systems manifest in distinct ways, expanding into the visual mode. The methodology involved analyzing the clauses in isolation and in relation to the image, observing whether the syntactic and semantic elements of the Process are realized verbally or depend on the visual component for their full meaning. Subsequently, the clauses were analyzed in a complementary relationship with the visual language of the ad, in order to identify whether these categories extend into the image. The findings point to three types of Transmodality: (i) Visual Expansion: the linguistic component of the experiential Figure can be syntactically complemented by the image; (ii) Visual Reference: the linguistic referent can be defined by the visual; and (iii) Visual Emphasis: the linguistic material may not rely on the image for comprehension, but the image serves as reinforcement of the verbal message. Furthermore, it was found that transmodal choices play a crucial role in meaning-making, with a predominance of Material Processes of the "doing" type, frequent use of transitive clauses, preference for indicative and imperative mood, as well as modalization and positive polarity. Finally, the transmodal analysis showed that, in most cases, the visual mode reinforces or defines the verbal meaning, highlighting that images are not merely decorative elements, but fundamental components in the construction of meaning. These results confirm the need to integrate both linguistic and non-linguistic elements into grammatical analyses of multimodal texts.
- ItemAmarildo e Pater : a transitividade nas charges na perspectiva funcionalista da linguagem(Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, 2019-06-05) Silva, Nélly Blanco e; Rocha, Lúcia Helena Peyroton da; https://orcid.org/; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1713827938371057; https://orcid.org/; http://lattes.cnpq.br/; Amorim, Carmelita Minelio da Silva; https://orcid.org/; http://lattes.cnpq.br/; Damasceno, Gesieny Laurett Neves; https://orcid.org/; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1635569588468079Amarildo and Pater: the transitivity in editorial cartoons in the functionalist perspective of language is a dissertation that investigates the phenomenon of transitivity in the editorial cartoons texts of the newspapers A Gazeta and A Tribuna, the newspapers of greater circulation in the state of Espírito Santo. The corpus is consisted by 12 journalistic cartoons of Amarildo (A Gazeta cartoonist) and Pater (A Tribuna cartoonist) about Olympics, among the ones collected between July 2016 and July 2017, totaling 642 observeded cartoons. The choice of this corpus was due to the critical nature that characterizes it and its relation so close to daily life, criticizing, satirizing and evidencing occurrences in the time line of the research. The theme "Olympics" was chosen because of the importance of the Olympics in Brazil and because there were the same number of cartoons of the two chosen artists. The linguistic functionalism based on Givón (2001), Hopper and Thompson (1980), Thompson e Hopper (2001) and Abraçado and Kennedy (2014) was adopted as theoretical reference. For the analysis of each editorial cartoon, the transitivity parameters proposed by Hopper and Thompson (1980), revisited by Abraçado and Kenedy (2014), as participants, action of the verb, aspect of the verb, punctuality of the verb, subject intentionality, polarity of the sentence, modality of the sentence, agency of the subject, affectation of the object and individuation of the object. This research differs from the majority made in transitivity, because the focus goes beyond the narrative, due to the cartoons, which also have non-verbal elements. With bibliographical research, documentary research, systematic observation and studies of the cartoons in question, the genre editorial cartoon was apparently highly transitive, but, in the research, it shown around 85% as low or medium transitivity. Finally, to go beyond the transitivity parameters proposed by Hopper and Thompson (1980), it was looked for the contribution of the textual linguistic to understand the context
- ItemDescrição de verbos de base adjetiva derivados com os sufixos -ecer e -izar, para o processamento automático de linguagem natural(Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, 2015-03-10) Picoli, Larissa; Smarsaro, Aucione das Dores; Amorim, Carmelita Minelio da Silva; Laporte, Eric Guy ClaudeThis research presents a syntactic-semantic description of verbs derived from adjectives with suffix –ecer, for example, enriquecer “enrich”, amadurecer “ripen” and fortalecer “strengthen”, and with suffix –izar, for example, banalizar “banalize” and suavizar “soften” in pairs of simple sentences like: (1) A herança enriqueceu Pedro “The heritage enriched Pedro”, (1a) A herança tornou Pedro rico “The heritage made Pedro rich” and (2) O aumento da renda banalizou as viagens “Rising incomes trivialized travel”, (2a) O aumento da renda tornou as viagens banais “Rising incomes made the banal travel”, in order to observe the semantic correspondence between base sentences (1) and (2) and transformed sentences (1a) and (2a). The description of the verbs is based on a list of deadjectival verbs in –ecer and –izar collected through searches in dictionaries, in the web and by introspection. From these verbs, simple sentences are built to observe their syntactic-semantic properties. The analysis of syntactic-semantic properties of the verbs is carried out within the theoretical-methodological model of Lexicon-Grammar (1975), defined by linguist Maurice Gross. These properties are encoded through syntactic formulas. The description of the structures’ properties allows for the elaboration of a language resource in the format of a Lexicon-Grammar table. The table is composed of a list of 88 deadjectival verbs with suffix –ecer and 84 verbs with–izar. The encoded description of the properties of verbs can be included in a data base for Automatic Processing of Natural Language (PLN).
- Item[FORA N]: ESTUDO DE UMA CONSTRUÇÃO À LUZ DA LINGUÍSTICA FUNCIONALISTA(Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, 2022-03-02) Silva, Ana Carolina Luz da; Damasceno, Gesieny Laurett Neves; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1635569588468079; https://orcid.org/; http://lattes.cnpq.br/; Amorim, Carmelita Minelio da Silva; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2581414238332873; Tesch, Leila Maria; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3919-1230; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9705222558363890; Marchon, Amanda Heiderich; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6576-949X; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7092607283921390; Rocha, Lucia Helena Peyroton da; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7422-5569; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1713827938371057Studying the language in its communicative multifacets and understanding its many uses are parts of the process of acquiring information about the culture and history of a community. This dissertation is characterized as a linguistic study that aims to investigate the structure [Fora N] from the perspective of Functional Linguistics, more specifically from the Use-Based Models, by Goldberg (2006), Bybee (2016) and Traugott and Trousdale (2021), and from cognitive-functional linguistics. It is from these assumptions that this work understands [Fora N] as a construction, which is a “conventional symbolic unit”, according to Croft (2005). With a qualitative-quantitative, descriptive and documentary methodology, according to Gil (2002), the collection of the corpus for the phenomenon analysis was made Corpus Now, one of the corpora available in the database “O Corpus do Português”. This database provides samples from the years 2012 to 2019/1, all of which were used for research and samples containing [Fora N]. The corpus of this research, totalizing 604 samples, was analyzed according to formal and functional parameters from Croft (2001) and, through the analyses, it was possible to verify that the structure [Fora N] is characterized as a construction that emerged from a specific discursive-pragmatic context, revealing, in the occurrences, a construction with high frequency of use.
- ItemO funcionamento dos adjetivos no contexto de uso das charges(Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, 2020-11-25) Santos, Diana Rodrigues Sarcinelli dos; Rocha, Lucia Helena Peyroton da; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7422-5569; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1713827938371057; https://orcid.org/0000000233660270; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0587537274912226 ; Amorim, Carmelita Minelio da Silva; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2581414238332873 ; Araujo, Fernanda Borges Ferreira de; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3394-269X; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2356963552728689; Damasceno, Gesieny Laurett Neves; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6556-9968; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1635569588468079; Lins, Maria da Penha Pereira; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7643527512641692This thesis proposes to investigate, in the light of Functionalism (GIVÓN, 1995, 2001; TOMASELLO, 1998; NEVES, 2018), the argumentative functioning of adjectives in cartoons, especially the argumentative force of these elements in the different syntactic functions in which they occur, relating syntactic, semantic, pragmatic and discursive aspects as recommended by the theory in question. Allied to Functionalism, the approaches of Pragmatics and Argumentation (AUSTIN [1962] 1990; SEARLE, 1979; EEMEREN; GROOTENDORST, 1983; KOCH, [1984] 2002; 2010; 2017; AMOSSY, 2011) of Textual Linguistics (MARCUSCHI, 2002; KOCH, 2004, 2014; CAVALCANTE; CUSTÓDIO FILHO, 2010; CAVALCANTE, 2013) and of Multimodality (KRESS; VAN LEEUWEN, [1996] 2006) also were used as the theoretical basis in this research. The corpus is composed of 136 cartoons collected from the website Charge Online between July 12th, 2017 and July 15th, 2018, whose themes are politics and soccer. In this total of cartoons were accounted 195 occurrences of adjectives. The results show that, in syntactic contexts (ROCHA LIMA, [1972] 2010; CASTILHO, 2010; NEVES, 2011), 65.7% of adjectives occur in the function of adnominal adjunct, 33.3% as a subject predicate and only 1% of them occur as an object predicate; in the semantic context (BORBA, 1996; CASTILHO, 2010), 54.3% are qualifying adjectives, 43.1% are classifiers and 2.6% of adjectives are deictic; in the pragmatic-discursive context, adjectives act as an important factor of argumentation, because their characteristic in the context of cartoons is to be performative manipulative, insofar as their argumentative functioning in discourse is to contribute to the process of reader’s manipulation, in order to direct their look at another point of view, making him interpret the argumentation put in this textual genre. It was found that the adjectives in subject predicate function are stronger argumentatively (83.1%) compared to the others that occur in the syntactic position of adnominal adjunct (34.4%) or object predicate (0%). It was also found that most of the qualifying adjectives occur in the syntactic function of subject predicate and were used with high argumentative force (84.7%), that most classifiers occur functioning as an adnominal adjunct and have low argumentative force (74, 7%), and that the deictics are in the minority, occurring more frequently as an adnominal adjunct and with a balanced argumentative force (50% low - 50% high). We used pragmatic-argumentative criteria based, mainly on Givón (2001), Koch ([1984] 2002; 2010) and Amossy (2011) combined with other aspects of syntactic, semantic and morphological nature, based on Bastos (1993), Castilho ( 2010), Koch ([1984] 2002; 2017), and of non-verbal nature (KRESS; VAN LEEUWEN, [1996] 2006) to interpret the argumentative force of adjectives. In addition to the adjectives contributing to the construction of the argumentation in the cartoon, due to their argumentative force, they emerge in the discourse, conveying semantic values associated with the intentions that the cartoonist intends to bring in his text, leading the reader of the cartoon to interpret it and , from there be influenced or not to think according to the message of the cartoon, since the adjectives have underlying and subjective values influencing the transmission of the senses.
